MEETING OF TECHNICAL VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (TVET) EXPERTS ON THE SELECTION OF TVET COURSES FOR ONLINE USE IN ECOWAS SUB-REGION

Objectives

The main objective of this technical meeting of experts on the TVET online courses is to identify and select courses which will be put online for ECOWAS countries to share as common curricula and teaching and learning materials.  TVET curriculum experts will study the wide range of TVET subjects and related curricular materials and select a number of them which be placed online using the UNESCO-Nigeria e-Learning platform for ECOWAS countries to use.

Expected Results

The following results are expected from the meeting:

1. Review and identify sets of TVET courses for sharing their curricula and  instructional material on-line in Open Source platform.
2. Adopt a methodology for sharing updates, of feedback and comments.
3. Test the functioning of the dedicated UNESCO-Nigeria Project Website with regards to Access and Down and Uploading
4. Set out mechanism for future linkages and exchange including Twinning arrangements defined with participating external TVET institutions in ECOWAS
5. Propose arrangements for on-line Training of Teachers on curricula and instructional material.

Proposed Programme

The workshop will span a period of 4 days, with one half day devoted to a field visit to Kaduna Polytechnic that has benefited under the UNESCO-Nigeria TVE Project. In addition to the opening and closing sessions the workshop programme will consist of nine working sessions for in-depth discussion and review of the curricula and teaching materials available in the five countries, identifying and selecting priority courses for sharing, mechanism for the access and use of the dedicated UNESCO-Nigeria website. The workshop will be conducted in English only.

 The opening ceremony will be held at 9.30 on Monday 18 January 2010 and the closing ceremony will be held at 14.00 on Thursday 21 January 2010. Participants from outside Nigeria are expected to arrive in Kaduna on Sunday 17 Januray and depart on Friday 22 January 2010.

Participants 

The first Meeting of TVET Experts will be devoted to the English speaking ECOWAS member countries, namely: Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Two TVET experts from each country will be invited to participate in the Meeting. The selected participants should be senior technical teachers/lecturers actively involved in and responsible for curricula and teaching at their institutions. The number of participants is expected to be about 15 in order to allow for effective interaction and knowledge sharing. 

Venue of the Meeting 

The Workshop is being organised by UNESCO BREDA, Dakar, in cooperation with the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE and UNESCO Abuja Office. The venue for the workshop will be the new UNESCO-Nigeria TVET Centre. Computer and ICT facilities and networking will be available for the participants during the working sessions for easy access to digital material.
